“Testimonial- 2018”

Haiti Mission Trip-Zach Strauss

Haiti was a 7 day mission trip where we traveled 8 hours outside of Port-Au-Prince to help with building a well and do a little bit of cleanup. The community we went to was where Hurricane Matthew made landfall. It was my first time seeing what true poverty looked like and it changed a lot for me. All of the things I took for granted, like having three meals a day, a roof over my head, living in a house with air conditioning, now looked like luxuries instead of the norm. To say I was out of my comfort zone would be a massive understatement. From staying in a hostel with 150 square ft rooms to seeing real poverty in first-person, I was not mentally ready. But that made the trip that much better. Having my eyes opened to struggles I hadn’t seen caused me to rethink a lot of things and habits I had back home. From working with the local villagers on the well to meeting the villagers and playing soccer with their children, I could truly see the Lord working on my heart and softening the hardness of it. The bonds that I developed with people on that trip are bonds I still have today and I couldn’t be more grateful for them.

The Lord did some truly incredible things with our team. One thing that comes to mind was how we kept seeing how even though the villagers had little to nothing in terms of physical things, they would only pray they continued to get closer with Christ and that their children would have a better future. That blew us away. Because we came from affluent families, we assumed they’d pray that their houses be restored, the money would last, things like that. But we were astonished that they only focused on getting stronger spiritually. That caused us to have some incredible conversations and dialogue about how we need to pray and what really matters most, a growing personal relationship with Christ. A second thing we saw was we had a couple of families pray for rain throughout the week. We’d heard from our translator that the village hadn’t had much rain at all and they desperately needed it for the crops to grow. On the last night, we went to the roof of our hostel and prayed and worshiped for the growth we’d all experienced over the week. As soon as Oceans started playing, a couple of us felt raindrops. We thought we were going crazy at first, but then it started picking up. After a minute or so it was pouring. None of us left that roof until we were drenched. It was an incredible testimony to Christ’s faithfulness and that He hears prayers and responds.
